Flare training for RNLI staff

Simon James, RNLI assessor, with Burnham-On-Sea RNLI crewBurnham-On-Sea RNLI crew received training on how to safely let off flares during emergencies.

Simon James, one of the RNLI's official assessors for competence based training, visited the Burnham lifeboat station on Monday evening to give staff practical advice and then test them on their knowledge.

He said: "We covered how to use flares, when to use them and why you should use them, focussing on the safety issues.

"The crew were also tested on their knowledge of what to do if a flare does not function correctly. They need to be prepared for every eventuality."

Two types of coloured flares are used at Burnham-On-Sea RNLI - red ones for emergencies and white ones to light up areas during darkness.
