Burnham-On-Sea
RNLI
welcomes
new D-Class lifeboat

Burnham-On-Sea
RNLI's new D-class lifeboat arrived in the town on Monday (December
11th) when crew members had their first opportunity to venture
out into the sea onboard.
The
boat, called Puffin, was put through a series of sea-based exercises
as the crew acquainted themselves with the various features of
the RNLI 'I.B.1.' D-class lifeboat.
Puffin
will provide valuable backup to the Burnham number one lifeboat
Staines Whitfield and replaces Global Marine, which will be put
back into
service with the RNLI pool fleet.
Features
onboard the new boat include a removable pod at the bows of the
craft, providing waterproof housing for VHF radio and embedded
GPS receiver, dedicated
stowage for the anchor and chain, a sea anchor, oxygen, first
aid equipment and flares, as well as a battery for the new 50hp
Mariner outboard motor.
The
I.B.1. has a designed operating speed of 27 knots, giving it a
theoretical endurance time of three hours for 75 nautical miles.
Lifeboat
Operations Manager Martin Cox said: "We are pleased to welcome
Puffin to our station. It is exciting to at last receive our own
D class lifeboat, and the increased performance of the IB1 will
be of great benefit during emergency callouts."
