Burnham-On-Sea's
new RNLI lifeboat named in official
ceremony

Crowds
of VIPs and onlookers filled Burnham-On-Sea's RNLI lifeboat station
on Saturday afternoon (12th May) when the town's new 'D Class'
lifeboat, Puffin, was officially named by its donor during a special
service of dedication.
Over
180 people, including MP David Heathcoat-Amory and VIPs from the
RNLI's headquarters, watched the service in the station's forecourt
in Pier Street.
The
event began with the singing of the National Anthem, followed
by RNLI Chairman Graham Wills opening proceedings. Sponsors Mr
and Mrs H Mitchell then formally handed over the lifeboat to the
RNLI.
Rear
Admiral John Clarke CB LVO MBE, a member of the RNLI Council,
accepted the lifeboat on behalf of the institution.
And
Martin Cox, Burnham RNLI's Lifeboat Operations Manager, accepted
the lifeboat on behalf of the station itself.
Howard
Ramm, RNLI training divisional inspector for the South, talked
about the D-Class lifeboat's capabilities before Reverend Graham
Witts of St Andrew's Church conducted a short service of dedication
which culminated with Mrs Mitchell formally naming the lifeboat
and pouring champagne over the craft.
At
the end of the ceremony the lifeboat was transported to the beach
where it was launched.
