Fishermen rescued by Burnham RNLI
after their boat breaks down

A
speedboat with two fishermen onboard was towed to safety by Burnham-On-Sea's
RNLI crew after
it broke down near Stert Island on
Monday evening (September 4th).
Global
Marine, the Burnham D-class lifeboat, was launched at 5pm to recover
the 14-foot speedboat.
Owner
Melvin Jones from Nottinghamshire had been fishing with a friend
about a mile out from Burnham on the northern side of Stert Island
when his engine refused to restart. The pair were left drifting
in the Bristol Channel on an ebbing tide.
The
lifeboat crew took the boat in tow and brought them safely to
the town jetty where they were debriefed by Burnham Coastguards.
Melvin
said: "Paddling was apparently getting us nowhere, so we
rang the Coastguard on our mobile phone. We are very grateful
for the assistance from the Coastguard and the lifeboat."
Burnham
Lifeboats spokesman Mike Lang said: "We were pleased to be
able to help. The RNLI advise all boat owners to equip themselves
with VHF radio as mobile phones should really only be used as
a backup."
