Unattended inflatable toys lead to launch of Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat

Lifeboat helmsman Nick Prout with the inflatables that led to Tuesday's launchSeveral inflatable toys floating in the sea off Berrow beach sparked the third launch of Burnham-On-Sea's lifeboat in just four days on Tuesday afternoon (July 18th).

The crew of the Staines Whitfield were called to Brean by Coastguards at 3.12pm and quickly located several rubber rings.

Finding nobody in the water near the inflatables, they conducted a thorough search of the immediate area until stood down by Coastguards at 4pm for return to Burnham jetty.

Burnham-On-sea Lifeboat helmsman Nick Prout told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We couldn’t be sure that the rings were unaccompanied until we investigated thoroughly. We brought the rings back to Burnham lifeboat station and handed them over to Burnham Coastguards."

Lifeboats press officer Mike Lang adds: "We urge members of the public not to leave these items on the beach. They get carried out to sea, and when sighted need investigation in case there is a person with them. This is at the very least a waste of time and money, and in a worst case scenario could cause loss of life when rescue resources are directed the wrong way."
