Coastguards
and lifeboats join rescue of windsurfer at Berrow
Two
Burnham-On-Sea lifeboats were launched on Saturday lunchtime (August
18th) after a windsurfer got into difficulty in mud at Berrow.
The
D-Class lifeboat 'Puffin' and Atlantic 75 lifeboat 'Staines Whitfield'
were called to the scene by Coastguards at 1.20pm, followed by
Burnham's hovercraft.
A
boom on one of the surfers' boards broke, leaving the other man
to try and tow the kit back to shore.
When
he began to struggle in the mud at the edge of the shoreline,
Berrow's beach warden called 999 to alert the emergency services.
The
lifeboat crew were able to check that the surfers were not injured,
while the Coastguard Mud Rescue team brought one of the men back
to the beach, as pictured above. Watch
video of windsurfer Stuart Biggs talking about the rescue.
Burnham
Coastguard Officer Robin Hewlett said: "One windsurfer was
in difficulty in mud at the tide line, so three of our mud rescue
team went out to him and brought him back to the beach."

The
RNLI's Puffin lifeboat is launched from the beach...

...
closely followed by the Staines Whitfield lifeboat.
