Coastguards
and Burnham lifeboat crew search for swimmer

Burnham-On-Sea's
D-Class lifeboat was called out on
Monday afternoon (May 19th)
to help Coastguards and police conduct
a search for a swimmer.
A
school teacher on a walk with his pupils raised the alarm after
spotting a man entering the River Parret, near the sluice gates
at Huntspill, at around 3pm.
"The
first informant called police, having seen the swimmer jumping
in and out of the water before later disappearing," said
Burnham Coastguard Station Officer Steve Bird.
Coastguards,
police and and the crew of the lifeboat 'Forever Forward Denise'
conducted a search of a large area of waterway, up and downstream,
without any trace of the man being found.
"We
believe he safely left the scene because no evidence of him could
be found despite a thorough search," added Mr Bird.
Burnham-On-Sea
RNLI spokesman Mike Lang said: "This was a very inappropriate
place to be in the water. The tide was in full flood, and very
dangerous."
