On Wednesday 11th August at 7.30 pm, Burnham-On-Sea residents will get the chance to form the RNLI supporters' group for the South West's newest lifeboat station.
Typically, supporters groups have no direct responsibility for either life-saving or fund-raising but are invaluable in many other ways. Interested people are invited to a gathering on Wednesday 11th August at 7.30pm in the RNLI Lifeboat Station, Pier Street, Burnham-On-Sea where arrangements and ideas can be discussed which will best suit all involved. 'One man, one job policy of the RNLI' 'One man, one job' has been the policy of the RNLI for many years and here, at Burnham-On-Sea, the newly established lifeboat Station is following that policy. a) There is the life-saving team - concerned only with the operation of the lifeboats and rescue. b) There
is also a separate fund-raising team. The local fund-raisers have been
in operation for many years collecting and feeding donations into central
RNLI funds. Supporters are normally local people with an interest in the RNLI, its boats and activities, who would be kept up-to-date with call-outs and rescues and could be expected to speak up for the lifeboat service in their own daily life circles. The system eases the pressure on volunteers with their own busy lives to run and allows volunteers to focus on the job they have taken responsibility for. Typically, supporters groups have no hands-on responsibility for either life-saving or fund-raising but are nevertheless invaluable. There may
be other activities, which would also be appropriate, but supporters
are free to take on as much or as little as they want.
