Burnham-On-Sea
RNLI Chairman receives his 'Arctic Star'
Burnham-On-Sea's
Tony Winterburn has been presented with an 'Arctic Star' to mark
his work during World War II with the Russian convoys.
Tony,
who is Burnham RNLI's Chairman, served in the convoys between
January and December 1945.
Most
surviving convoy veterans felt that this service should be recognised
as a separate campaign, but successive governments have only allowed
recognition of this by inclusion of the service into qualification
for the Atlantic Medal.
Earlier
in the year, the Under Secretary for Defence met with a few Arctic
Convoy veterans and came up with a solution to this impasse by
suggesting that they adopt an emblem.
This
they have done and Tony has been presented with The Arctic Star
and associated the citation reads: "This is presented to
you for serving your country in the last war, North of the Arctic
Circle and West of the Urals."
Tony
Winterburn said this week: "I was extremely pleased to receive
this emblem. The Russian Convoys were difficult and dangerous
because we were fighting the elements as well as the enemy."
