A long‑delayed housing development in Lympsham is finally set to move forward after Somerset Council signed off the legal agreements needed for construction to begin, four years after the plans were originally approved.
Developers Strongvox Homes Ltd, J. D. W. Puddy and A. E. Reader first submitted proposals in 2019 to build 50 homes at Beavers Lodge Farm on Lympsham Road, between Burnham-On-Sea and Weston-super-Mare.
Following three years of negotiations with planning officers, a revised scheme for 40 homes was narrowly approved by Sedgemoor District Council’s development committee in July 2022, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here.
Since then, further legal discussions have continued behind the scenes, but Somerset Council has now confirmed that all agreements have been completed, meaning work on the site could finally get underway, although local residents say there is no approved developer for the site at the current time.
The site sits on the eastern edge of the village near the A370 Bridgwater Road, with vehicle access planned from Lympsham Road opposite Coppice Cottage.
Two pedestrian links will also be created, including one leading towards the sports club and primary school. Under the terms of the agreement, none of the new homes can be occupied until both pedestrian routes have been delivered.
The scheme will include a mix of one‑bedroom maisonettes through to four‑bedroom houses, with 16 of the 40 properties designated as local needs affordable homes.
These will be offered through a combination of social rent and shared ownership to people with close ties to the village, such as those with family living locally or who work within the parish.
A spokesperson for Focus On Design, representing the developer, said the plans aim to create a high‑quality residential environment that reflects the character of Lympsham, with landscaping, green spaces and sustainable drainage features forming part of the layout.
They added that consistent architecture and detailing across the site will help create a strong and vibrant appearance. Construction could begin in the coming months, says Somerset Council.
