Age UK Somerset has issued a call to residents in the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area to share their experiences and ideas as the charity works to shape a new Dementia Wellbeing and Connection Programme, with Sedgemoor set to be the first area to benefit.
The charity says the programme is being designed to help improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and keep people living with dementia – along with those who care for them – connected within their own communities.
It will bring together a mix of support, including a Dementia Choir to offer music and social connection, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups, and a one‑to‑one home‑based CST option for those unable to travel.
Age UK Somerset says the home‑based support is particularly aimed at people who may struggle to attend group sessions because of mobility issues, limited transport or rural isolation. Transport provision is also being explored as part of the wider plans.
The charity acknowledges that many people affected by dementia face significant barriers when trying to access help, especially in rural parts of Somerset where services and transport can be limited.
To make sure the new programme reflects real local need, a community survey has been launched and the charity is especially keen to hear from people living with dementia, carers, family members, professionals and community organisations.
Age UK Somerset says feedback gathered through the survey will directly shape the development of the programme and strengthen funding bids to help bring the new support to life. Residents across Somerset – including the Burnham-On-Sea area – are being encouraged to complete the survey and share it with anyone who may have valuable insight to offer.
