Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club is preparing to host its annual Jo Gooden doubles tournament on Saturday 24th October.
The event was first held in 1988 in memory of Jo Gooden (née Champion), a prominent junior player at club, county and national level whose family have been long-standing supporters of the Avenue.
Jo was killed in a traffic accident at the age of 23. Her father, Dick, presented a trophy for the tournament, which he wanted to remain a fun day of tennis for players of all standards and a chance to meet competitors from other clubs.
The 2026 event will start at 10am and will again be a round-robin doubles event open to players of every ability from clubs across the county. Partners will be drawn on the day, with organisers hoping to pair players from different clubs.
Entry costs £8 and includes a light lunch and homemade cakes for tea. Players can sign up on the list in the clubhouse or by calling 07483 229097 or Pippa on 07507 711756. Entries close on Thursday 22nd October, though late entries may be accepted if numbers allow.
The club says it hopes the day will once again deliver enjoyable tennis and a friendly atmosphere in Jo’s memory.
