Burnham-On-Sea police have praised residents for their ‘goodwill and understanding’ during last Friday’s explosives investigation in the town.

Scores of residents were evacuated around Beatty Way when a 100-metre exclusion zone was put in place around a property where explosive substances were found.

Inspector Roger Tolley, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “In the short time since the completion of the incident that occurred in Beatty Way on Friday, the feedback from members of the community both directly and indirectly effected by the days events has very been positive.”

“The contribution of the District Council emergency disaster teams, voluntary organisations including the Red Cross, WRVS, Salvation Army, Somerset 4×4, the committee members of the Community Centre, the Devon and Somerset Fire Service, the ambulance service, the committee of the BASC ground, Tesco in Love Lane (who provided toilet facilities for police staff and a location in their car park for co-ordination of the policing resources), as well as a large number of central resources from across the whole of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area has so far indicated that when our community was put in danger from an identified threat, the response was professional, effective and appropriate.”

“I am considerably heartened by the goodwill, fortitude and understanding displayed by all the members of the public adversely effected by the events of the 20th January and am confident that the offers of support and consolation displayed by the wider Burnham and Highbridge community to those effected was something we should be very proud of.”

“Potentially, the reputation of our town was threatened, however, I believe that we have been successful in demonstrating to the rest of the Country by all our actions, the cohesion and strength that exists amongst us, as community.”
