Pupils at Berrow Primary Church School are celebrating after being awarded Eco-Schools recognition with Distinction, following a year-long project to protect the environment and promote sustainability across the school.
Members of the school’s Eco-Club have spent the year raising awareness of environmental issues and encouraging positive changes within the school community. The children have taken an active role in spotting ways to make the school more environmentally friendly and sharing what they have learned with others.
As part of the project, the Eco-Club carried out an eco audit of the school, helping them identify areas where improvements could be made. They also organised litter-picking activities, helping to keep their local surroundings clean and encouraging pupils to take pride in the area.
The children designed colourful posters promoting recycling, which were displayed around the school to encourage everyone to think carefully about how they dispose of their waste. They also created signs for light switches, reminding staff and pupils to switch off lights when they are not needed and helping the school cut unnecessary energy use.
The Eco champions have also been sharing their message with the wider school. Each week they have planned and delivered sessions during whole-school activities, focusing on sustainable lunch boxes and exploring how everyday choices can affect the environment. The sessions have given pupils a chance to pass on what they know and encourage others to make more environmentally friendly choices.
The club’s commitment, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the year have helped make sustainability an important part of school life. Achieving Eco-Schools recognition with Distinction is an acknowledgement of the hard work the children have put into the project.
The school says it is incredibly proud of its Eco-Club. Their work, it says, shows how small changes made together can make a meaningful difference and inspire the whole school community to take action for a more sustainable future.
