A large group of travellers arrived on land next to Berrow Church yesterday evening (Saturday, July 21st).

The convoy of a dozen caravans and vehicles pitched up on a field besides St Mary’s Church which is often used for those attending church events.

The land is owned by Berrow and Burnham Golf Club and the club is understood to have already started formal action to get the group removed.

Police were at the scene on Saturday evening, as pictured below, with officers seen speaking to the travellers soon after they arrived.

Barry Kew, Berrow Parish Council Chairman, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The land is owned by the golf club and they are now taking steps to get them removed.”

Two years ago, a large group of travellers set up camp on Berrow Green over the summer, and the Parish Council built a bund around the green to prevent them gaining access.

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey is working on a change to the law to prevent travellers illegally trespassing on land, as we reported here. On Friday July 20th he met with several local people in Burnham to discuss the problems.
