Two walkers who followed the River Brue from its source to the sea will speak at St Bridget’s Church in Brean on Saturday, 17th October, sharing reflections from a first-of-its-kind pilgrimage along the historic waterway.
The afternoon talk will hear from Ewan Jones, chair of BrueCREW Charity, and Karuna Mahi, who lives beside the Brue near Glastonbury. Together with other river friends they walked the full course of the river over the August Bank Holiday weekend, ending at St Bridget’s.
BrueCREW led its first “Brue Life” pilgrimage from the river’s source in the parish of Brewham, beneath Alfred’s Tower, down to the sea beneath Brean Down. Organisers say the route followed the historic Axe course used before Glastonbury’s monks created their fish pond at Meare.
The group was received at St Bridget’s on the evening of Monday, 31st August by Mother Robyn and her team.
Mr Jones and Ms Mahi will talk about walking “with the Brue” through its landscape and communities, and about how people are reconnecting with the life the river supports. The afternoon is also expected to cover the river’s ecology, geography, history and spirituality, and its place in Somerset life.
Organisers say the 3pm event may also touch on legends linked to St Bridget of Kildare, who is believed to have travelled through Brean on a pilgrimage to Glastonbury in the 5th century.
