Burnham and Highbridge residents invited to book free NHS Health Check

-

Somerset Council is inviting residents in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge to make the most of the spring season by booking a free NHS Health Check — a simple step that can help identify early signs of serious health conditions.

The council says this is an ideal moment to reset routines and refocus on wellbeing. The NHS Health Check programme assesses cardiovascular health and can highlight risks linked to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. For those over 65, it also includes information on early dementia indicators.

Councillor Graham Oakes, Lead Member for Public Health, Climate Change and Environment, said spring is a natural time to take stock. He added that even people who feel well may still be at risk of underlying conditions, and that the free checks offer clear, personalised advice to help residents stay healthy.

Eligible residents aged 40 to 74, who do not already have a diagnosed heart condition and have not had a check in the past five years, can book appointments at a wide range of venues across Somerset.

Local options include Trowbridge Hall in Highbridge, as well as libraries and community hubs in Minehead, Chard, Street, Wellington, Porlock, Taunton, Yeovil, Glastonbury, Wells, Wincanton, Shepton Mallet and Frome.

Each appointment lasts around 20 to 30 minutes and is carried out by a trained healthcare professional. During the check, residents are asked about their health and family history, have their height, weight, waist and blood pressure measured, and receive a quick blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar. A personalised cardiovascular risk score is then provided, along with tailored advice to support healthier habits. Results are shared with the patient’s GP if follow‑up is needed.

What happens during an NHS Health Check?

Your NHS Health Check usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and is carried out by a trained healthcare professional such as a nurse, pharmacist or healthcare assistant. During your appointment, they will:

  • Ask simple questions about your health, family history and any medication you take
  • Measure your height, weight and waist
  • Check your blood pressure
  • Take a quick blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar levels
  • Provide a personalised cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Offer tailored advice to help you stay healthy
  • Share your results with your GP for follow-up if needed

You will receive a cardiovascular risk score showing your likelihood of developing heart or circulation problems over the next 10 years, explained as low, moderate or high. You will also receive a breakdown of key health indicators, including:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Alcohol use score
  • Physical activity assessment
  • Diabetes risk assessment

What happens after the check?

At the end of your appointment, you’ll have time to talk through your results and receive practical advice on how to improve or maintain your health. This may include support with:

  • Improving your diet
  • Increasing physical activity
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Losing weight
  • Reducing salt intake
  • Stopping smoking
  • Lowering cholesterol

Where appropriate, you may also be referred to local services such as stop smoking support or physical activity programmes.

This spring, Somerset Council is encouraging eligible residents to take advantage of this free service, helping you feel informed, supported and ready to make the most of the months ahead.
