The youngsters have busy during recent days created the special artwork to ensure it arrived on time for Tom’s big day.

Dom Gregory, Commanding Officer at Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Sea Cadets, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were all a little bit humbled when we saw the effort being put in by Captain Tom at the age of nearly 100 to raise a modest amount of money to support the NHS.”

“I think all of us are blown away by just how much Captain Tom’s effort has resonated within the wider community, especially with our younger cadets who have written to him with such eloquence.”

“I’m very proud of every single cadet: they’re in the middle of the scariest crisis that I hope any of them will face in their lifetime, and they’ve responded by thinking of someone else.”

He adds: “Our Unit have been unable to parade, go paddling or go sailing, or do our normal slate of activities along with everyone else during this lockdown.”

“We’ve been trying to be inventive about how to keep our cadets engaged by doing as many practical things as possible.  There are limits, though and we’re really looking forward to seeing our cadets in person, just as soon as we’re permitted.”

“We are still recruiting for cadets over the age of 12 and anyone who’s thinking about joining can still take part in some amazing online training that’s being put together by our dedicated team of volunteers.”
