Burnham-On-Sea’s Coastguards and BARB Search & Rescue were called to Weston on Saturday afternoon (June 28th) amid safety concerns for several people wading in deep mud.
The teams were called out to support Weston Coastguard at two incidents during a day of high temperatures that led to busy beaches.
In the first incident, two children has been spotted far out on the tideline beyond the Grand Pier struggling in deep mud with the tide incoming. In the second incident, a hydrofoil enthusiast was seen wading through deep mud from Uphill towards Brean Down.
A BARB spokesperson says: “Our Spirit Of Lelaina 3 hovercraft was heading to a fundraising event in Brean when our volunteers were tasked with helping investigate reports of two children in difficulty in deep mud near Weston Pier.”
“As the hovercraft arrived, our crew received the welcome news from Weston Coastguards that the youngsters had freed themselves and headed up the beach.”
“As the BARB team was preparing to head back to Burnham, we were tasked with investigating a hydrofoil enthusiast who was spotted wading through deep mud on nearby Uphill Beach.”
“The hovercraft was flown out to check on his welfare and confirm that he was safe and well despite wading through mud in the extreme heat.”
“Thanks go to our hard working volunteers for their time and efforts on a busy afternoon in the sweltering heat.”
