Burnham-On-Sea High Street was closed for two evenings this week to allow Somerset Council to replace ageing street lighting columns.
Contractors began work on Thursday evening (March 26th), as pictured here, removing older columns at the southern end of the High Street and installing modern replacements that meet updated safety standards.

A total of 19 columns along the shopping street were scheduled to be replaced this week.
A Somerset Council spokesperson told Burnham‑On‑Sea.com that Friday’s work focussed on the northern end of the High Street.

The upgrade follows recent safety concerns after several older columns toppled during winter storms, as previously reported here by Burnham‑On‑Sea.com.
The new lighting columns are also expected to be strong enough to support Burnham’s Christmas lights later this year as part of a refreshed festive display.
