Burnham-On-Sea MP Ashley Fox has visited the Walpole Landfill site between Highbridge and Bridgwater after concerns were raised by local residents about the height of the waste mound and ongoing odour issues.
Mr Fox toured the site to speak directly with operators and the management team about the impact the landfill is having on nearby communities, especially nearby Pawlett.
Residents have reported worries over the growing mound and smells drifting across the area.
During the visit, the MP was told that sections of the landfill facing Pawlett are currently being lined and capped.
This process is expected to reduce the height of the mound by around 20% over the coming years as the waste naturally decomposes.
Site operators also confirmed that the area is due to be covered with soil this summer, with grass seeding planned for the autumn to help improve its appearance.
Additional gas capture infrastructure is being installed to increase the amount of landfill gas collected and converted into electricity — enough to power approximately 2,500 homes.
The improvements are expected to reduce emissions and lessen the impact on surrounding communities.
Ashley Fox said: “I visited the site after hearing concerns from residents about the size of the mound and the odour coming from it. I raised these issues directly with the operators and made clear the importance of addressing them.”
“While I was pleased to learn of the steps being taken, my priority is to ensure that residents’ concerns are dealt with.”
“I will continue to work with the company and Pawlett Parish Council to make sure that any continuing issues are properly addressed.”
