A huge total of £12,769.59 was collected from spectators during Monday’s Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Carnival thanks to a bumper turnout.

The figure was down slightly by £661 on last year’s record total of £13,430, but it was still the third-highest collection total ever.

Organisers said they were pleased with the amount following a huge turnout of over 25,000 people, boosted by mild and dry weather.

“It’s a great amount,” Carnival Collection Convener Annalee New told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The £12,769.59 collected not only helps local charities and good causes, but also enables us to fund next year’s carnival, so we thank spectators for their generosity on the night,” she added.

Over 80 entries paraded through the town in a spectacle of colour and excitement, watched by big crowds all along the route.

The judges awarded the best entry in the entire procession to Marketeers Carnival Club for its Oliver themed cart – see the Burnham-On-Sea 2018 Carnival results.

Some of the biggest cheers of the night from local spectators went to Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club with its ghost-themed float called The Spook Returns.
