Burnham-On-Sea fundraisers complete pier-to-pier walk during one million step challenge

-

Burnham-On-Sea fundraisers Ashley Cox, Ashley Plant and Richard Lambert have completed Diabetes UK’s one million step challenge — finishing with a 10-mile walk from Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier to Burnham Pavilion over the weekend.

The challenge ran from 1st July to 30th September, with each walker aiming to complete one million steps — the equivalent of around 10,900 steps a day.

Ashley Cox says the cause is close to home after his dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes following a major heart operation. “The support he has had has been great,” he says.

With work and family life this hasn’t been an easy challenge, but they have been walking the seafront pretty much every evening to make sure they smashed the target.

“We walked well over the one million steps, which is the equivalent of walking from Bristol to Edinburgh and back, and pushed to achieve as many steps as we could.”

On Saturday September 26th the trio walked from Weston Grand Pier to Burnham-On-Sea Pier, completing the 10-mile route and adding more than 24,000 steps each to their totals.

“We had lots of great comments walking through Weston, Uphill and Brean all the way back to Burnham Pier,” Ashley adds. “We’ve also now raised over £1,200 and thank everyone that’s supported us.”
