Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Repair Cafe has this week launched a newly-expanded ‘tech amnesty’ service.
It is taking donations of unwanted Smart Tech items such as old phones, laptops and tablets and, after data wiping them, they are then redistributed to those who need them most in Somerset communities.
Organiser Biddy Hammond, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “After two very successful Tech Amnesties in Burnham, the Repair Cafe is pleased to announce that Burnham and Highbridge now has a permanent drop off point.”
“Burnham Information Centre has kindly offered to receive tech items on our behalf.”
She adds: “They are able to accept old, unwanted or damaged laptops and PCs including towers, mobile phones and smartphones, tablets and e-readers, game consoles, digital cameras, smartwatches, cables and accessories BUT NOT printers, monitors, mice or keyboards.”
“When tech is donated it will be passed on to Donate IT in Wellington, who will securely clean all data, compliant within Data Protection Regulations, repaired if necessary, and then passed them on to the disadvantaged for education purposes, and those who are actively seeking work or have other needs, but are not in a financial position to afford tech. The recipients will be local people who need it the most.”
The Burnham Information Centre is located on the seafront between the Bay View Cafe and BARB, and it is open seven days a week between 10am and 4pm.
Ian Jefferies, manager at Burnham’s information centre, says: “We are pleased to support this expanding service which provides a great community service in Burnham and Highbridge and look forward to welcoming locals with their old, unwanted or damaged items.”
The Burnham-On-Sea repair cafe, operated by the team above, continues to be held every first Wednesday of the month from 10am-1pm at the Waffle Hub in Burnham’s College Street at the Methodist Church.
The Highbridge repair cafe is held every third Saturday of the month at The Purple Spoon, YMCA, Highbridge from 10am – 1pm.
The repair cafe service launched in 2023Â for local residents to help them save money by getting items fixed, avoiding new purchases, and also reducing the number of items that go unnecessarily to landfill.
