Burnham-On-Sea RNLI volunteers carried out a joint training session with local kayak paddlers on Sunday (April 26th) as part of their regular weekend exercise.
The volunteer lifeboat crews launched for their routine Sunday morning training near Burnham-On-Sea Motorboat and Sailing Club.
As the session concluded, the lifeboat teams practised recovering casualties and kayaks from the water, while the paddlers took part in their own exercise by retrieving the station’s rescue manikin into a kayak to simulate helping an unconscious casualty.
Helm and Lifeboat Training Coordinator Nathan Meager said: “It’s really good to train with a variety of different craft and people so if we do get tasked then we’re prepared. This was a really useful exercise.”
Club Safety Officer Luke Moore added: “As a club we want to promote safe and fun paddling for everyone regardless of ability. When we set out on a trip we don’t expect anything to go wrong but sometimes it does. Working with Burnham RNLI allowed us to practise rescues where outside assistance was needed. It was an enjoyable and informative session and we would like to thank the lifeboat crew for their support.”
The club meets locally on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer and also organises weekend trips further afield. Beginners are encouraged to join their introductory course starting in May, with all sessions led by Paddle UK‑qualified coaches or leaders.
The RNLI has also shared five essential safety rules for anyone heading out on the water:
- Wear a buoyancy aid – a well‑fitted PFD increases survival time in cold water.
- Carry a means of communication – keep a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch on your person.
- Check weather and tides – avoid offshore winds and always check the forecast before setting out.
- Tell someone your plans – let a friend or family member know where you’re going and when you’ll return.
- Know your limits – paddle within your ability and experience.
Burnham-On-Sea RNLI is currently recruiting for several volunteer roles, both operational and shore‑based. Anyone interested can contact the station on 01278 789375 or email burnham-on-sea@rnli.org.uk. Click here for more about the paddling club here.
