A Burnham-On-Sea runner is preparing to take on a half marathon this autumn to raise funds for the hospital that helped treat her eye cancer.
Carol Hampton will be heading to the Bournemouth Half Marathon on October 11th as part of a nationwide challenge supporting Moorfields Eye Hospital, where she received specialist treatment.
She says her training is going well and she has already reached the ten‑mile mark with ten weeks still to go, and hopes to meet her £500 fundraising target.
Carol says eye cancer is a rare condition that is “not talked about”, and she wants to use her challenge to raise awareness about the importance of regular eye tests.
She has been in remission for nearly 18 months, with the tumour now inert, but has recently developed side effects from radiotherapy — something she was warned could appear within two years of treatment.
“Regular eye tests and being aware about changes in your vision are so important,” she said. “I’m back to the eye hospital next week for more images. Your eyes are so valuable – look after them.”
