Burnham-On-Sea’s remarkable pensioner Sue Nicholls has completed her 14th London Marathon — and achieved a faster time than last year.
Sue, aged 80, crossed the finish line of Sunday’s (April 26th) 26.2‑mile event in 5 hours, 44 minutes and 15 seconds, beating her 2025 time by an impressive 15 minutes.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com after the event, Sue said she was “very pleased” with her performance, especially as she was once again running to raise funds for Cancer Research.
“They were great conditions,” she said. “It was warm but not too hot and the cloud in the second half of the run was very welcome. I really enjoyed it. I feel fine with no aches or pains!”
This year’s London Marathon marks her 31st marathon overall, adding to a running career that has taken her across the world. Sue has previously completed major international events including Boston, Tokyo, New York, Chicago and Berlin, and even tackled China’s Great Wall Marathon in 2018. In 2017, Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here that she had been awarded a special medal recognising her global marathon achievements.
Sue shows no signs of slowing down. She will next take part in the Bristol Half Marathon in May, followed by the Grimsby 10km and the Manchester Half Marathon, also in May.
“Age is no barrier – I love running. It keeps your body and mind active,” she says.
Her son Stuart says the family is endlessly proud of her dedication. “She’s very inspirational for us. We follow her all around the world for her running events,” he said. “We join in the 10ks and half marathons, but mum can keep the marathons to herself!”
Sue continues to be an inspiration to many in the Burnham-On-Sea community — proving once again that determination, passion and positivity can take you a very long way.
