Burnham-On-Sea’s Love Lane is among a number of key routes across Somerset set to be resurfaced this year as part of Somerset Council’s latest highways maintenance programme.
The Council’s Highways team, working with contractor Kiely Bros, will be carrying out surface dressing on selected roads across the county in the coming months.
The technique is a nationally recognised method used to seal road surfaces, improve skid resistance and prevent water from penetrating the road structure — helping to reduce potholes.
Surface dressing involves coating the existing road with bitumen, applying stone chippings, and then rolling the surface. Most sites are completed within a few hours, although larger stretches may take up to three days.
The work is weather‑dependent, meaning dates may change at short notice. In most cases, roads will remain open with traffic managed by stop/go boards, although some narrow locations may require short temporary closures.
Pedestrian access will remain available throughout, but there may be brief periods when vehicle access is restricted. “Business open as usual” signs will be displayed where needed, and residents with specific access requirements are encouraged to speak to the on‑site team.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, said the annual programme is essential to keeping the county’s roads in good condition.
“Every summer we deliver this programme so that our network remains safe,” he said. “Surface dressing is critically important in keeping our highways running efficiently. It’s used on roads still in good condition to extend their life — much like repainting wooden windows.”
