A Burnham-On-Sea resident who has this week celebrated her 100th birthday says the key to a long and happy life is simple: ‘work hard, help others, and always stay positive’.
Ivy Baker, who lives at Allendale Court in Rectory Road, marked her milestone with a special afternoon tea on Thursday (April 9th) surrounded by friends and fellow residents.
The centenarian beamed as she opened her official birthday card from The King and Queen, a moment she described as “very special”.
Reflecting on reaching 100, Ivy said her lifelong motto has kept her going through every chapter. “I never say I can’t do it — I always have a go!” adding that staying upbeat and keeping busy have been her guiding principles.
Ivy spent many years working in accounting — a career she remembers fondly. “I’m sharp with my figures!” she says, recalling her time working with car maker Vauxhall in Northampton before retiring to Burnham-On-Sea, where she has enjoyed an active, independent lifestyle.
Rhian Knight, Development Manager at Allendale Court, said Ivy’s outlook is admired by everyone around her.
“Ivy is incredibly positive — she always has a smile! She is still very active and even travels to Tesco on the community Slinky bus regularly, which everyone admires.”
After celebrating with her family, Ivy rounded off her centenary with a relaxed afternoon tea alongside residents and staff.
