Dozens of carnival carts arrived in Burnham-On-Sea’s Queen’s Drive earlier than scheduled on Saturday (November 5th) after the cancellation of the North Petherton Carnival following a serious crash on the M5.

The decision to cancel North Petherton’s event was taken by organisers following advice from police, fire, Highways Agency and ambulance bosses who have been dealing with the tragic accident on the M5 which has claimed the lives of at least seven people, as reported here.

The carts therefore arrived from Bridgwater into Burnham-On-Sea half a day earlier than usual.

The work to move them began at 2pm and the first cart to arrive was Lime Kiln’s entry, Infernus, shortly after 4pm, as pictured above.

Burnham Carnival Chairman Phil New told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was the first time in the carnival’s history that the carts arrived so early in Burnham, so it did require some re-planning on our part, but the team pulled together really well.”

“We feel sorry for North Petherton having to cancel its event and our thoughts go out to all those affected by the M5 crash.”

All the carnival carts are now in Queen’s Drive and the Frank Foley Parkway, both of which are temporarily closed until around 11.30pm after Monday’s Burnham Carnival.
