A record total of £13,430 was collected from spectators during Monday’s Burnham-On-Sea Carnival after a bumper turnout.

The figure was up by £486 on last year, delighting organisers following a massive turnout of more than 30,000 people.

“It’s a superb figure,” Carnival Treasurer Jonathan Walter, pictured below, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The figures reflect the higher turnout of spectators we had on Monday night and the generosity of people in supporting the carnival,” he added.

Jonathan, pictured below, added: “The paper donations were up – we received £300 in £20 notes, £700 in £10 notes and £985 in £5 notes, which was a good increase on last year.”

“A big thank you goes to all the volunteers, marshalls, judges and collectors who helped, plus those who gave us donations for parking.”

The money collected on carnival night goes to help fund the event and also to support local charities.

Over 80 entries paraded through the town in a cavalcade of colour and excitement, watched by big crowds.

The judges awarded the best entry in the entire procession to Huckyduck Carnival Club for its Flying Dutchman cart – see Burnham-On-Sea 2017 Carnival results. The biggest cheers of the night from local spectators went to Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club with its western-themed float called ‘Yee Ha!’.
