County Councillor for Bridgwater South, Steven Gill, (pictured) has crossed the floor from the ruling Conservatives group this weekend.

Highbridge councillor and local Liberal Democrat leader Joe Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com that Mr Gill had cited “the disastrous decisions made by the new administration as his reason, including spending over £100,000 searching for a new chief executive whilst frontline staff faced pay freezes, the freezing of council tax whilst cutting services, and the closure of the Sedgemoor Splash.”

Cllr Jill Shortland, Leader of Somerset County Liberal Democrats, welcomed Cllr Gill into the group, calling him a “man of principle”.

The moves means the Conservatives have 34 seats on the county council, while the Lib Dems now have 22. Labour has two seats.
