St Andrew’s Church in Burnham-On-Sea was filled with the sounds of laughter, live music and fundraising on Sunday afternoon (August 9th) when a well‑attended community garden party helped raise funds for Weston Hospicecare as part of its ongoing Open Gardens initiative.
The church grounds were busy throughout the afternoon, with visitors enjoying a relaxed summer atmosphere with music from local group The Ritz Crackers, whose lively set provided a cheerful backdrop to an afternoon of refreshments, games and more.
Reverend Sharon Eldergill, Associate Vicar, said it had been a fantastic occasion, praising the support shown by everyone, all in aid of such a good cause.
“There was plenty for everyone to enjoy, including a marvelous raffle and tombola, with great prizes donated by local people and many local businesses, and people were delighted with the things they won.”
“The ‘Guess the name of the Teddy’ was very popular, and Jeffery the bear went happily home with his new owner! Children were able to take part in crafts linked to St Andrew’s Year of the Angels, while the garden games provided plenty of fun for all ages.”
A quieter space was offered by Burnham Bereavement Café, who invited visitors to write the names of loved ones who have passed and hang them on a special remembrance tree. The simple gesture provided a thoughtful moment for reflection and highlighted the vital role Weston Hospicecare plays in supporting families through illness, loss and bereavement.
Sharon adds: “There was a tremendous amount of support and generosity throughout the afternoon. We are so grateful to everyone who donated prizes, baked cakes, organised activities, provided the live music, helped on the day or simply came along to support the event. Thank you so much!”
“The garden party was a wonderful celebration of community, friendship and remembrance, while raising valuable funds for one of our local hospices who make such a difference to people at some of the most difficult times. We are delighted to have been able to play our part in supporting such an important local service – and I’m particularly delighted that we were able to eat cake to help the hospice!”
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Mike Facey was among the visitors, saying: “It was a super afternoon with lots of activities, raising funds for this important local charity. My thanks go to all who organised the event and supported it.”
