Concerns raised by residents over plan for new restaurant in Burnham High Street

-

Residents living next to a proposed new restaurant in Burnham-On-Sea town centre have this week raised concerns about the plans.

We recently reported here that Burnham Shopping Centre at 8-8A High Street had submitted a planning application to build a first floor extension which will be used as a licensed restaurant and bar. The shopping centre will remain open on the ground floor.

Town councillors supported the proposals at a meeting on October 9th, but nearby residents have this week attended the latest meeting of the council’s Planning Applications Committee to express their concerns.

Local property owner Ann Popham was one of two residents who spoke at Monday’s meeting. She said that residents had not been given notice of the application being considered by the Town Council at their October 9th meeting and therefore had been unable to attend or request to speak.

Among several concerns raised were ‘inadequate’ fire safety exits, poor disabled access, privacy issues from overlooking onto neighbouring properties, plus extra noise and environmental issues.

Cllr Andy Brewer, Chairman of the Committee, thanked the residents for attending, and said the short notification period would be discussed further by the council. He added that the “application was dealt with in good faith at our last meeting and members felt the previous objections had beem dealth with.”

He added that the residents had raised “some very valid points” that would be considered by the relevant authority.

He added that council ward member Cllr Phil Harvey will represent the residents at Sedgemoor District Council’s upcoming Development Control Committee meeting, where the planning application is due to be considered for a final decision.
