Burnham-On-Sea town council’s precept – its portion of our council tax rates – is set to rise by 3.45 per cent during 2007, it was confirmed this week.

The town council’s Policy and Finance Committee proposed a total precept requirement of £279,486, which was endorsed at a meeting of the full town council on Monday night (January 8th).

This means the town council’s tax requirement for this year will be £41.65 per Band D property, an increase of £1.39 or 3.45% on last year.

Included in the calculations is £25,000 set aside for architects, solicitors and other professional advice associated with the potential purchase of Burnham’s The Princess Hall, although the council is keen to point out that a deal on the future of the hall is still being negotiated.

It was also revealed this week that grant funding from Sedgemoor District Council for both Burnham Community Hall and Highbridge Community Hall had been “cut dramatically.”

A spokesman said: “The town council had in previous years received matched funding from SDC. As the community centres are in a reasonable financial position, it was agreed a grant of £800 per hall would be paid for 2006/7 but that the Clerk would write to each management committee to say that from 2007/8, the grants would need to be applied for and considered with other annual applications.”
