More than 100 Burnham residents attend diabetes screening clinic

More than 100 Burnham-On-Sea residents took up the offer of free diabates checks this week when a mobile screening clinic visited the town.

112 people were tested during the three-hour period, and a total of nine were referred to their doctors for further tests and possible treatment for high blood-sugar levels.

John Hodgson, President of Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club, which organised the event, said “The fact that almost ten per cent of the people tested required further testing and possible treatment indicates how serious the problem is. All people over fifty years old should be tested regularly.”

“Thanks to Tesco for their support, the nurses from Highbridge Medical Centre, the Burnbridge Diabetes Group for their financial sponsorship, and also Highbridge Caravans for the loan of the caravan.”

The free testing was held last Friday, September 9th, when local people were able to have a free test in a mobile clinic in Tesco Car Park.

A spokesman from Burnham Diabetes Group said this week: “There are more than one million diabetics registered in the UK – many of them leading normal lives thanks to modern treatment. But doctors believe there are at least another million out there who don’t know they are diabetics.”
