Staff from Specsavers in Burnham-On-Sea donned brightly coloured Indian dress and performed a traditional dance at Burnham Infants and St Joseph’s School this week to celebrate Diwali.
Pupils at both schools not only learnt about the Hindu festival of lights but also about how our eyes help us to see colour in everyday life and the importance of eye health. They were also given an iSpy education pack and a children’s eye health magazine.
The visit took place as part of National Children’s Eye Health Week to teach the children about the importance of eye health after research revealed that over two fifths of parents say their children haven’t had a test at an opticians in the recommended last two years (41%).
Sai Rama, store manager from Specsavers in Burnham, says: “We wanted to bring to life the importance of eye health to a young audience in a lively and fun way. Diwali is a celebration of colour and the only we can experience this is through good eye health.”
“Children with undiagnosed eye health conditions could face severe consequences for their education and wellbeing. Early detection between the ages of three and eight though can identify and treat many conditions.”
Janet Sadiq, head teacher from Burnham Infants, added: “The children were enthralled by Sai’s traditional dress and her performance of a Diwali dance. It was a wonderful way to bring to life the importance of looking after our eyes that the children could connect with, a lesson I have no doubt they will remember.”
