Sedgemoor District Council has this week published a new version of its code of conduct for dog walkers at Apex Park in Highbridge following a dog attack there last weekend.

As first reported here, a teenager suffered injuries when she was attacked by by a white Bull Mastiff running loose.

Sedgemoor District Council said this week it is “committed to working with dog owners to ensure all park users can enjoy Apex Park as well as other open spaces across the district.”

Spokeswoman Sam Taylor said: “Whilst we welcome dog walkers at Apex Park we do ask pet owners to follow a basic code of conduct.”

“For example, dogs should be kept on a lead near the cycle path, their mess always cleared up and disposed of within dog waste bins, with dogs being kept under close supervision at all times to ensure they do not disturb wildlife or other park users.”

“If a dog is likely to run off, become aggressive or disturb other park users they should be kept on a lead at all times. The children’s play areas and skatepark are off limits to all dogs.”

She added: “Most dog owners follow the code of conduct, however, to help further promote responsible dog ownership within Apex Park, Sedgemoor has revamped its leaflet on ‘Dog walking in Apex Park’.”

The leaflet, which explains the code of conduct, is available online here, or by request on 01278 436420.

“Public information signs have been erected across the park reminding dog owners of their responsibilities. Our Dog Wardens regularly patrol the park speaking with dog owners and encouraging responsible ownership. We can also issue fixed penalty notices when owners have not cleared up after their dog.”

If you are concerned about dog fouling within the park please contact Sedgemoor’s Dog Wardens on 01278 435210. Concerns regarding dangerous and aggressive dogs should be referred to Avon and Somerset Police on 101 or in an emergency 999.
