This bumper-sized 32lb 3oz conger eel was reeled in by a fisherman in the waters off Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday, becoming the biggest local catch of the year.

Martin Quinn, pictured, netted the eel from his boat to the west of Stert Island during the latest competition run by Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

“It’s the biggest catch of the year for a club member here in Burnham – there are some good-sized conger out there at the moment,” the club’s Simon Stroud told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The catch came during the annual nine-hour Fred Peters Trophy, held in and around Bridgwater Bay.

Unfortunately for Martin, the competition prizes this month were pre-allocated to the best cod and whiting catches. Nigel Deavey was declared the overall contest winner, with Jon Doubleton second and Steve Saxby third.
