Burnham’s ‘confusing’ event signs to be axed, decide town councillors

-

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council is to stop using blue event signs like these amid concerns that they are putting off motorists travelling into the towns.

At a meeting last night (Wednesday), town councillors heard that the traffic management signs were introduced last year by Burnham’s Town Centre Manager to give motorists advance warning of road closures in the run-up to large events like the Food Festival.

But several councillors and town centre traders said they were having a negative effect.

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton said: “They were introduced on a trial basis and simply haven’t worked. They have put off coaches coming into Burnham and have certainly had a detrimental effect. I don’t think they work – they should be scrapped.”

Cllr Nick Tolley, who previously said the signs appeared to be blue police emergency signs, said: “The colour, format and shape of the signs was off-putting and confusing to anyone on four wheels. I think they should be put away in a shed somewhere.”

Councillors voted unanimously to stop using the signs this year, however the decision is subject to a final vote at the next full Town Council in February.
