Firefighters from across the area spent over three hours tackling a big blaze at a waste landfill site near Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (November 10th).

Several hundred tonnes of green waste went up in flames at the Walpole Landfill Site in Puriton shortly before 11.30am.

Fire crews from Bridgwater, Burnham-On-Sea and Street were sent to the scene, as pictured here.

“Crews found around 10% of 2,000 tonnes of green waste well alight and smouldering,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Bridgwater’s crews initially tried extinguishing the fire with water jets before they requested the help of two appliances from Burnham-On-Sea plus an incident support unit from Street.

Staff at the waste site used a mechanical digger to create a fire break while the firefighters damped down the hot spots. The cause of the blaze is believed to be accidental.
