Burnham-On-Sea Police and firefighters say a huge blaze that destroyed a barn and thousands of pounds worth of straw in West Huntspill on Saturday (February 4th) may have been set deliberately.

Crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater were sent to Sloway Lane, West Huntspill just after 3pm, as pictured here, to battle the blaze.

“A barn measuring 30 metres x 20 metres containing over 150 big bales of straw was well alight,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the scene.

“We got to work with a main jet and a compressed air foam jet to prevent the fire spreading and then held a watching brief to allow the straw to safely burn.”

A telehandler was also used to remove some bales from within the barn while crews battled the fire.

Police shut Sloway Lane while crews tackled the incident and fire crews and Police are investigating the cause of the blaze amid suspicion that it may have been set deliberately.

Anyone with information should contact the police’s non-emergency number 101.
