Four runners will pass along Burnham-On-Sea’s Esplanade on Saturday morning as part of an emotional 300km charity challenge honouring baby Tommy Flynn and raising £50,000 for Bristol Children’s Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Nick Flynn, Kurt Russell, Matt Trump and Aaron Cuzens are currently making their way from Reading to Taunton in a three-day challenge that symbolically reflects Tommy’s life and final days.
The 178‑mile distance represents the 178 days of Tommy’s life, while the three‑day duration mirrors the time he spent in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he received specialist care.
The team set off from Reading on Thursday morning and are due to visit the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in Bristol on Friday before continuing towards Somerset.
After an overnight stop in Portishead, they will follow the coastal cycle route south, passing along Burnham-On-Sea’s Esplanade on Saturday morning.
From Burnham, the runners will continue towards Bridgwater before joining the Bridgwater–Taunton Canal for the final stretch to the finish line at Taunton Rugby Club.
Nick, whose son Tommy inspired the challenge, says the team is aiming to raise £50,000 to support the unit that cared for his family.
Nick and the three close friends are running a mile for every day of the little boy’s life over 3 days, the length of time he was in hospital for. This is a huge 178 miles which equates to just under two and a half marathons a day for three consecutive days.
