More than 300 runners took to the streets of Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday, October 2nd when the town’s half marathon was held after a 10-year absence.

Peter Grist, winner of the 2005 Burnham Half Marathon21-year-old Peter Grist of Frome (pictured right) won the 13 mile event in a fast time of 1 hour, 12 minutes and 33 seconds. He told Burnham-On-Sea.com that he was “over the moon” to come first.

“This is a great course – it’s flat and fast with very few hills, making it ideal,” said Peter, who is a Bath University student and member of Wells City Harriers athletics team.

“I’ve already run the Bournemouth and Radstock half marathons this year and won the Warminster 10 mile race, but I’m delighted to have won here today. This is only my second race win.”

The Burnham half marathon was last held in September 1995, and its return was hailed as another great sporting event for the town, which already boasts an annual aquathlon, triathlon and sea swim.

The 13-mile run started at the BASC Ground at 11am. The runners then moved along Love Lane and Queens drive, before turning left along the A38 towards Brent Knoll and then on to East Brent, Lympsham, Wick Road and Red Road, before returning to Burnham via Berrow Road.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “Entries have been accepted from as far as Merseyside to London but even more encouraging is the fact that over 50 entries have been accepted from the Burnham and Highbridge area, showing a great commitment to exercise in the town.”

A one mile fun run at the Stoddens Road ground for youngsters waiting for family and friends to return was also held and attracted 62 participants. The race was won by 13-year-old Tom Blake in under seven minutes. The top ten are shown below. The event was marshalled by Burnham Lions, who also received a contribution of the funds raised on the day.
