The 72nd annual Highbridge Festival Of The Arts in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge this month saw a record 2,000 performances.

The popular 2019 festival, which ran over 12 days of March, featured a wide range of music and dance performances. The judges said they were impressed at the quality of entries.

We have the full results below from all the classes:

Saturday 16th March

The final day of The Festival began with vocal solos from adult singers.  The oldest competitor in this year’s festival, 89 year old Dennis Salmon, entertained everyone with his performance of a Frank Sinatra song.  Many other adults overcame their nerves to take to the stage for the first time, earning applause from the admiring audience.  Highlight of the afternoon was the comic Cat’s Duet by Rossini, performed by Alice Bingham and Ruth Hibbert.  Not only did they achieve a high distinction mark, but they also earned loud applause from the delighted audience.  The evening session at St John’s Church welcomed three adult choirs from the Weston area: Vocalise, Worle Community Choir and Waves of Harmony.  The adjudicator complimented them all for their high standard of singing and awarded the first honours mark of the Music Section to Vocalise for their performance of two songs in unison.  The Mayor, Mayoress and Town Crier thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening, saying how lucky Burnham & Highbridge are to have so many talented people taking part in the Festival and that the choirs’ fantastic performances were a fitting way to round-off the 72nd Highbridge Festival.

The final day of the Instrumental Music Section began with nearly 100 school children singing in their school choirs. They delighted the audience and adjudicator and brought a tear to many an eye! The day progressed with solo and duet performances on instruments ranging from the violin to the drums.  The Festival was delighted to welcome the Deputy Mayor Cllr Andy Brewer and his wife to the evening session.  Cllr Brewer told the large audience how much he was looking forward to the listening to the talented musicians who would be playing during the evening. The evening was rounded off by The King Alfred Concert Band, who like several other earlier entrants gained a distinction mark for their performance.

Sunday 10th March

The Dance Section of Highbridge Festival of The Arts finished with performances by 15-18 year old dancers during Sunday morning and early afternoon.  “We’ve had a wonderful time watching the dancing, “commented a member of the audience as she left. “What a pity that more people don’t come to watch – we didn’t know any of the entrants, but do love dancing”.

The late afternoon saw group performances by the 15-18 year old dancers and later adult groups, some of whom had travelled from Bristol. The large audience enjoyed themselves and complimented the adults on their bravery in taking to the stage.  Dance adjudicator, Linda Young, said that she’d had a lovely time adjudicating throughout the festival and that she had been impressed with the talent that was on show.  She added that she would remember this Festival, as it was only the fourth time in her adjudicating career that she had awarded an Honours mark.

The Festival continues throughout the week at Highbridge Community Hall where musicians and vocalists will be showcasing their talents from 9.30am.
