A new community bridge designed and built by FLI, part of the Haley Group in Highbridge, has been officially donated to the Frankie Howerd Trust, marking a major boost for the charity’s work supporting older residents in rural communities.
The eye‑catching bridge, created with a mix of style and fun, now links key areas of the Trust’s community centre and has been named in honour of Bob Shaw, whose encouragement and long‑standing support have left a lasting legacy within both the Haley Group and the wider community.
The Frankie Howerd Trust works to reduce isolation among elderly people by providing transport, a café and a welcoming communal space. Increasing numbers of local school pupils now join older residents for shared meals and conversation, helping to build stronger intergenerational connections.

The bridge was officially opened by actress and presenter Dame Joanna Lumley, who brought warmth and enthusiasm to the ceremony as she unveiled the new structure.
The donation comes as the Haley Group celebrates its 40th anniversary. Reflecting on the milestone, founder Bill Haley said the bridge stands as a fitting tribute to Bob Shaw’s influence and a gesture of gratitude for his guidance over many years.
The Haley Group employs 180 people across four construction‑related companies — William Haley Engineering, FLI Structures, Concept Fabrications and George Jackson — all of which were rescued from administration and rebuilt into successful enterprises.
The Frankie Howerd Trust has thanked the company for the landmark gift, which is already proving a popular feature at the community centre.
