Historic roadside mile markers have been restored in the Burnham-On-Sea area following concerns about their condition.

Local councillors Andrew Gilling and Bob Filmer say they became aware that a milestone in East Brent had been badly damaged and then “practically destroyed” when the verges were being cut.

Andrew says: “Bob and I took this up with the County Highways authority and it has taken a long time to see this milepost restored to its former glory.”

Bob adds: “It didn’t stop there, a review of the other mileposts heading north along the A38 was carried out and these too have been restored and in some cases slightly moved to make them more noticeable and less likely to be damaged in the future.”

“This is helping to make our heritage more visible and protecting it for the future.”

He adds a lot of people have been involved including the County Council, District Council Conservation Officer, the Parish Council, South West Heritage Trust, Dorothea Restorations and others.
