Hot weather causes spate of beach call-outs for Burnham Coastguards

-

Hot weather has attracted large numbers of holidaymakers to beaches in the Burnham-On-Sea area this weekend — and led to a spate of incidents for local ambulance and Coastguard crews.

Temperatures reached 26°C (78.8°F) in Burnham on Saturday afternoon (August 24th), the hottest day of the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called out four times during the day to assist with two medical evacuations and a missing child.

In the first incident, just before 1pm, a young boy using a bodyboard had come off the board and suffered a painful injury to his ankle. Coastguards safely moved the boy to a waiting ambulance crew, who gave him pain relief and then took him to hospital for treatment.

Later, South Western Ambulance Trust called on the assistance of Burnham Coastguards at a second incident at around 3.20pm where a Brean beach user had fallen ill. The person was taken into care by the ambulance crew.

In a third incident, just after 4pm, a boy had become separated from his parents on Brean beach after washing his hands in the sea. The worried mother raised the alarm and the child, who had become disorientated on the busy beach, was found further along the sands by his father.

Burnham RNLI and Coastguards were also called out at 12.50am on Sunday morning to resorts of a distressed person entering the water at Brean. As crews arrived on station, they were told the person was out and safe.
