Children at a Burnham-On-Sea school have raised £1,000 towards a memorial bench in memory of a youngster who passed away earlier this year.

The St Andrew’s School pupils had hoped to raise £600 for the bench in memory of 12 year-old Joe Laoutari who lost his battle with cancer in March.

But instead they raised an incredible £1,000 from donations during a non-uniform day and a cake sale.

Joe’s brother, Andreas, is a pupil at the school and his class (4F) organised a cake sale.

They brought in scores of cakes and they sold them all throughout the school. Their efforts raised £240 of the total! The remaining £760 came from the children and their families.

“It has been an extraordinary display of generosity by our school community which never ceases to impress and amaze me,” head teacher Gavin Morris told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We have all been touched and overwhelmed by this event and are thrilled that we can now have the bench installed. It will be our tribute to Joe and a legacy to his outstanding bravery.”
