Burnham-On-Sea’s MEP blasts ‘absurd’ £1.7billion bill from EU

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s representative in the European Parliament says the Prime Minister is right to refuse to pay £1.7bn in EU budget payments.

West Country MEP Julie Girling said on Friday that David Cameron should not pay the huge sum being demanded by the European Commission.

“I fully support the Prime Minister’s refusal to pay this extra £1.7bn. It is absurd to impose what is effectively a tax on economic success,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“All political parties should be united to fight this, this is not the time to posture smugly from the sidelines. British politicians need to act together to see this off.”

The European Commission says the budget contribution demand is due because of the better than expected performance of the British economy over the past four years.

However, David Cameron said on Friday that Britain would not pay the sudden and unanticipated demand for €2.1bn, a bill sent by the European commission to the UK Treasury, with the request that it be paid by 1st December.
